A complete translation of the sixty three surviving anecdotes and short tales in the Iuan hwen jyh. This is a collection compiled by Yan Jy tuei, one of the greatest intellectuals of the sixth century, who was known for his philosophical interests as well as his religious ardor. The stories are all on the theme of the avenging ghosts of the dead returning to take vengeance on their murderers. The collection was made for purposes of moralistic propaganda (rather than as fiction or entertainment) and therefore the stories are presented as "true" events. Many of the tales concern known persons (some even quite famous) and the antecedents of some of the tales have been identified. The book consists of an introduction, translations of the sixty three tales, textual notes for the reconstruction of the tales (which suffered textual damage during their more thon 1,200 years of transmission), a bibliography, and an index.
