Fung Yu lan (feng youlan) was a Historian of Chinese philosophy who has also elaborated a "new system" centered on the question of "Chinese Modernity". Michel Masson first details Fung’s intellectual itinerary during the 1920-1937 years. Then he gives an account of the main tenets of Fung’s argumentation from 1937 on: traditional society and industrial society; meaning of traditional morality in a society in transition; reinterpretation of the Chinese philosophical tradition in the light of modernity; the Chinese Philosopher's present tasks and the new metaphysical discourse. The sixth and last chapter prepares the way for the debate on the meaning and the ambiguities of Fung’s thought, and it underlines the incompatibilities between Fung and his colleagues, be they confucians or marxists.
